the barcelona team
The experience of our group at the Universitat de Barcelona (IEEC – ICCUB) in the space sector dates from Hipparcos satellite (1989 – 1993) and has contributed from its very beginning to the concept of the Gaia mission and its design. Our team is providing important contributions to simulations, core and photometric processing and in the preparation of the data archive of the mission. It comprises 30 people between scientists and engineers, from developing big data management software to scientific testing and validation, and preparing for the scientific exploitation of the data of the mission . The Barcelona Data Processing Center also led by our team coordinates the running of the heaviest part of the operational data reduction system at the Marenostrum (Barcelona Supercomputing Center BSC-CNS) and CESCA.
I started with astronomy very young, with the Hale-Bopp comet flyby and afterwards with science documentaries and science fiction series like StarGate. Since these early times I became an amateur astronomer first using a small telescope in my house and after, when I became member of the amateur astronomy organization “Associació astronómica de la Garrotxa”, with a much bigger one that was in their Observatory. There in the amateur organization, I realized I like to do astronomy outreach and I do it when I have time and whenever it is possible. Nowadays I am combining the amateur astronomy with research. Thanks to research I am travelling a lot to Mexico and I have fallen in love of their culture and traditions.
Apart from astronomy, I am a very active person and I am involved in a lot of other projects far away from it. I have been a Catalan dancer in “esbart Marboleny” since I was 12 and thanks to that I travelled a lot showing our Catalan culture and learning about the local cultures at the same time (Quebec, Taiwan, Bulgaria, …). Now I am also involved in the Catalan scout movement (Minyons Escoltes i Guies de Catalunya) and in a lot of other cultural organizations.
In my free time, I try to do two of my biggest passions: photography and mountain trekking. I really think that the place where I am really happy is in the mountain, walking, singing around a fire, sleeping in a tent and taking what nature provides us, mushrooms, strawberries, berries … for me that is the true life!
