Borrachero, Raúl

Since I was little I’ve always enjoyed the thrill of the discovery, to learn interesting things and (usually) marvel at them. This lead me to experience a lot of diverse fields such as music, art, sports, etc. But I always also have been fascinated with science and more specifically, computer science. My first computer was an Amstrad CPC that my parents bought when I was 5. I was so excited by this machine and its capabilities that when I grow up a bit more it was crystal clear what to study in the future and those steps brought me to course Software and Hadware engineering. On the other hand, It is my brothers’ fault my interest for science fields such as astronomy. They were fond of educational science magazines and subscribed to a couple of them. I read all those articles with increasing interest, specially for the astronomic ones, while marveling at those pictures of distant planets and stars. When I ended up with the oportunity of working in this field I didn’t think twice to sing in. I enjoy most kinds of music, focusing mainly on rock music, and sports, specially martial arts like judo.

Gaia UB team

The experience of our group at the Universitat de Barcelona (IEECICCUB) in the space sector dates from Hipparcos satellite (1989 – 1993) and has contributed from its very beginning to the concept of the Gaia mission and its design. Our team is providing important contributions to simulations, core and photometric processing and in the preparation of the data archive of the mission. It comprises 30 people between scientists and engineers, from developing big data management software to scientific testing and validation, and preparing for the scientific exploitation of the data of the mission . The Barcelona Data Processing Center also led by our team coordinates the running of the heaviest part of the operational data reduction system at the Marenostrum (Barcelona Supercomputing Center BSC-CNS) and CSUC
