Laia Casamiquela Floriach is a PhD student that started her thesis in 2013, under the supervision of C. Jordi, L. Balaguer-Núñez (UB), and R. Carrera (IAC). In 2012 she obtained her bachelor degree in Physics for the University of Barcelona, and in 2013 she finished her master degree in Astrophysics, Particle Physics and Cosmology in the same
university.

Her master thesis was related with the derivation of physical parameters of stars using Strömgren photometry, from observations acquired with the 2.5m INT telescope and the WFC (wide-field camera) instrument.

Her PhD thesis is related with the spectroscopic surveys of Open Clusters, mainly OCCASO (Open Clusters Chemical Abundances from Spanish Observatories) in the Northern hemisphere. This survey is providing homogeneous radial velocities, physical parameters and individual chemical abundances for Red Clump stars in a sample of 25-30 old/intermediate-age Open Clusters (Casamiquela et al. 2016). To do so, we use the high resolution spectroscopic facilities: FIES@NOT, HERMES@Mercator (Roque de los Muchachos Observatory) and CAFE@CAHA2.2m (Calar Alto Observatory). In the context of large surveys OCCASO is a natural complement to the Gaia-ESO Survey (GES), so she is also involved in the GES team.

She participates in teaching the subjects Astronomy and Observational Astronomy of the Physics Degree in the University of Barcelona. She enjoys participating in outreach and educational activities giving conferences and courses to general public. In particular she is a teacher of the project “Finestres al Cel” of the program Joves i Ciència (Catalunya-La Pedrera Foundation iniciative), for 16th years-old boys and girls.

Gaia UB team

The experience of our group at the Universitat de Barcelona (IEECICCUB) in the space sector dates from Hipparcos satellite (1989 – 1993) and has contributed from its very beginning to the concept of the Gaia mission and its design. Our team is providing important contributions to simulations, core and photometric processing and in the preparation of the data archive of the mission. It comprises 30 people between scientists and engineers, from developing big data management software to scientific testing and validation, and preparing for the scientific exploitation of the data of the mission . The Barcelona Data Processing Center also led by our team coordinates the running of the heaviest part of the operational data reduction system at the Marenostrum (Barcelona Supercomputing Center BSC-CNS) and CSUC
